There are always many months of preparation leading up the the day when we finally pour the concrete footings. At this stage the house usually looks much too small, and the rooms continue to look several feet too small until the furniture is placed.
Much of this site consists of diatomaceous earth, a chalk-like substance which breaks into up into rough lightweight chunks when excavated; to enable smooth, even trenches we first ripped up the entire construction area and then re-compacted the earth to a depth of 2 feet.
