The large brick terrace helps to visually integrate the home with the hillside, and it also affords a marvelous vantage point to view the canyon below. Hawks and buzzards are a common sight from the terrace, sometimes hovering well below the level of the house. Once a buzzard started to investigate my son's radio-controlled glider, then jerked suddenly and flew quickly away when he realized it was NOT another buzzard. Once I ran over a skunk on the driveway and wondered how to dispose of it. I need not have worried. Within two hours the buzzards had completely devoured it; not a hair remained, not even the smell.
