LIVING ROOM FIREPLACE

The fireplace is often the heart of my designs, and this one is my favorite.  The basic design element is an arch cut into a circular form.  The stone mason discovered a source of naturally weathered stone lying among the brush on the hillside above the house.  It was beautiful, some of it covered with lichen which we tried to preserve.  The fireplace lintel is curved in one direction to fit the wall and in the other direction to fit the arch, and to accomplish this I welded it in short sections.  The sun could be blistering there in the mountains, so I built a canvas awning for such jobs.  This snapshot was taken just before the house was completed, and the outside steps and terraces had not yet been built.
